spring

Saw a family standing together beside a building’s hedgerow while having tea across the street. Wanted to recreate that scene, so I came back several days later to the restaurant from which I’d seen it and sketched this view from one of the windows in pencil (the building and street corner). Walking home I drew the leaf and the flowers (basically any flower I could find in my back yard lawn in mid-April) and added these in. Added dipping pen and watercolor work to highlight.

6 1/4 x 10 inches, watercolor pencil, dipping pen on printed copy of pencil original with additional detail drawing work added (all done on-site), 2019. Print is a matted and mounted, signed 600 dpi color print on white acid-free cardstock with half-inch borders. Note: there will be no limit on this print run. I only use lightfast, pigment-based HP ink, which meets the ISO 11798 standard.

Did this in a coffee and tea place across the street using my small sketchbook. Enlarged it a bit and added watercolor as carefully as I could so as not to distract from the building structure too much. Added two applications of medium-dark inkwash when I thought the high color saturation gave it an airless feel. Much prefer it this way.

Trolling the trolls.

Wanted to draw faces and figures without worrying about using people’s likenesses for my own copyrighted work, so I drew them (the foreground figures with the red eyes) from patterns I saw in various old wood table tops, and also from patterns I saw in a washcloth (the faces floating above with the green eyes). Compiling all these together I thought it would be more effective to play against their sinister appearance, and so opted for something funny.

school in april

Liked this view of trees overlapping buildings, and made a point of returning to draw it before the leaves and flowers obscured it too much. If you’re wondering, the pine tree visible in the background had had its lower branches shorn so that all that was left was the trunk, which was hidden by some of the foreground trees. This is a drawing that made me use several versions of the same color (pink and blue). Left the grass white so that the drawing breathed better. Unusual proportion for me, as it’s nearly square.

Sometimes less is more when rendering a forest scene.

After I got a new fountain pen I suddenly got the confidence to attempt ink drawing on-site, and this is one of the results. Since I was using my small sketchbook I went for a bit more detail. Despite it being well into fall the leaves in this forest were still nearly all green. But rendering them so later just made the main trunk look incongruous and the line of grass at the edge of the forest sloppy. Eventually realized that the main thing here was the composition, and it would work if the color was subordinate to it. So I just accented the leaves and avoided the earlier problems.

Even though I read a lot, I never could study in a library, and it turns out I get bored drawing them, too. So I just looked out the window to my left and put most of what I could see in the room with me. Walking home I stopped on one of the lawns and sketched the leaves and flowers in the lower left corner.

One of some old drawings I used to see if I could use color over a complete drawing in a presentable way. Unusual for me in that it’s not a building or tree or landscape, and not based on life or any picture. Had about seven different greens to use, and to keep the saturation high I didn’t want to blend any of them.

Did this from a photograph, one of my first attempts to draw a wide view of a forest quickly, with grainy, impressionistic results. Done when I often drew out of sheer frustration / caffeination. Sometimes that results in solid work.

A Flower in the Sea

Was walking by an old apartment building with grass so high the lot looked abandoned, and saw a bachelor’s button flower in the middle of the weeds.  So I cell phoned it up, then chose it out of several other pics, even though I initially thought having a single flower in the middle wasn’t enough for a whole drawing.  But the flower was off-center and the weeds fit in nicely with the flower branch.  Did the pencil version in a few weeks, then inked it in in about three hours.
